Type 1 diabetes
An autoimmune condition in which the body stops making insulin and must replace it.
In type 1 diabetes the immune system destroys the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas, so the body makes little or no insulin and depends on injected or pumped insulin to survive. It's usually diagnosed in childhood or early adulthood and isn't caused by diet or lifestyle.
Because insulin must be dosed to match food, activity, and stress, people with type 1 watch glucose closely and are alert to both lows and the buildup of ketones when glucose runs high.
